June 14 Follow the decommissioning of the largest research reactor
Follow the work to decommission Denmark's largest research reactor, DR3, from the former Risø Research Centre. Our task is to remediate the former research area on the Risø peninsula to a 'green field' state – meaning to remove radioactivity and chemicals so that the area can be used without restrictions in the future. The DR3 reactor is one of these projects.
WWe are currently engaged in the second phase of dismantling and decommissioning DR3, which represents the largest research reactor ever operated by Denmark. During the initial phase, all peripheral piping systems, cooling installations, electrical systems, and other components of the reactor were dismantled.
Follow our surveillance camera here as we proceed with removing the internal components and dismantling the reactor block. In the center, a thick steel plate is visible, which protects against the strong radiation from the research reactor's interior. The hall itself is safe to access, but all employees must wear a dosimeter that measures the current radiation.
Updated October 8, 2013: Our timelapse video now covers approximately 12 months of work from summer 2012 to summer 2013.
