Authorization for decision-making on intermediate storage

Danish Decommissioning has been granted DKK 1.1 million to prepare a decision basis for the Danish Parliament regarding the establishment of a Danish interim storage facility for low and intermediate-level waste. This will be done in collaboration with GEUS and the Danish Institute for Radiation Protection (SIS).

V Our tasks will be a description of how the establishment of the intermediate storage facility can be carried out, among other things in relation to storage units, safety criteria and safety analyses, as well as operation of the intermediate storage facility.

The appropriation is intended to finance danish decommissioning costs to, among other things, review possible building types and practical conditions related to construction, and the cost of plant and operation over a 50-100-year period, as well as to describe how an assessment of the risk of leakage/dispersion of radioactive material from the storage facility can be carried out. In preparing the basis for decision-making, we will visit and exchange international experience with, among others, the Netherlands, where an intermediate storage facility has been constructed for 100 years.

The decision basis is scheduled for completion by early 2014. The placement of any interim storage facility will not be addressed as part of our work on the decision basis.
