Fire in operating plant last week

On the morning of Tuesday 3 March, a fire broke out in building 211, in the cell where the bitumen plant is located.

A The plant was in operation and the fire is probably triggered by the heating band around the pipe, where the liquid hot asphalt is fed down to drums. The fire department came quickly and the fire was extinguished in minutes. There was no release or contamination with radioactive material. There has been no breach of the plant and therefore no radioactive material has been released.

A thorough assessment of the situation and of the installation will be carried out in close dialogue with relevant authorities. The plant will only be put back into service if there is approval from the nuclear regulators.
