24 Aug Interim Report on Interim Storage Facility
COWI A/S has now submitted the report “Safety, Economy, and Operation for a Danish Interim storage facility Solution for Radioactive Waste”.
TThe report constitutes the first part of the supplementary interim storage facility investigations, which were decided upon by the political parties on March 11, 2015 (see the decision basis and the terms of reference).
In the report, COWI addresses the following topics:
- Facilities at a Danish intermediate storage facility
- Proposal for an operational organisation
- Estimate of total costs for the operation of an interim storage facility for 100 years
- Comparison of safety between an interim storage facility and a final repository
- Estimate of total cost of an intermediate storage facility with subsequent final deposit
Next Steps
Before the end of 2016, a comprehensive report detailing supplementary investigations into an interim storage facility solution will be available. This report will be based on COWI's report and a report from GEUS (Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland) on siting criteria, including socioeconomic factors.
Subsequently, the selection of a long-term solution will be politically addressed during 2017.
