High tide preparedness

Again this year, DD 's preparedness practiced to put a NoFloods barrier around the storage facility, which houses approximately 5300 drums of low-level waste.

In a container near the waste storage facility, about 200 meters of Water Tube is ready. As a prelude to the storm season, the rollout, assembly and filling of the orange tarpaulin hose has been practiced through on time. However, for the emergency response exercise, only air, not water, is pumped into the hose. Like the other measures trained to secure the building in high-water situations, the filling will only be fully implemented on the day the high tide warning is a reality.

During storm Bodil in 2013, an elevated water level of 2.06 metres was measured in Roskilde. This was still a long way from the floor level of the storage building, but to safeguard against a possible even higher water level it is important to have a contingency in place until the waste has been moved to a new storage facility.

"We know the challenges of having a low-lying storage facility so close to Roskilde Fjord, and our preparedness is trained and ready," says Director Ole Kastbjerg Nielsen and continues: "In May, the Folketing decided that an upgraded storage facility should be built higher up in risø's terrain. We look forward to getting started on this so that we can have a passive protection against high tide."
