03 Feb Environmental Impact Assessment Requirements
The Environmental Protection Agency has now identified the issues to be included in a report on the environmental impact of a new upgraded waste storage facility.
Danish Decommissioning intends to establish and operate a new, upgraded storage facility for Denmark's radioactive waste – a project covered by Annex 1 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Act. As the developer, we must therefore prepare an environmental impact report before the Danish Environmental Protection Agency can assess whether the project can be implemented. The report describes the project's effects on the environment and the mitigation measures necessary to limit any potential damage.
Based on a concept paper prepared by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, all citizens were invited to submit their ideas and proposals for topics to be addressed in the report during the period from December 2, 2019, to January 2, 2020. A total of four consultation responses were received.
Similarly, our neighboring countries Sweden, Norway, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, and England had the opportunity to comment on the project within a so-called Espoo consultation. The Danish Environmental Protection Agency received requests from Sweden and Germany to participate in the environmental impact assessment process. Sweden also submitted several comments on the project. Poland opted not to participate but requested continuous updates.
The Danish Environmental Protection Agency has processed the inquiries received from both domestic and international sources and has summarized the conclusions in a scoping statement. This statement defines the scope of topics to be included in the environmental impact report that Dansk Dekommissionering is now tasked with preparing. Once the report is available, an eight-week consultation period will be announced.
