Jan 08 Goals and results plan for 2026 published
An increased focus on the new upgraded storage facility, a specific target for the dismantling of DR3's reactor block, and several other targets form the backbone of Dansk Dekommissionering (DD)'s target and results plan for 2026.
Thenuclear facilities at Risø must be decommissioned, and by 2073 at the latest, a final repository for Denmark's radioactive waste must be operational.
These are the overall strategic objectives for DD, which have been unanimously adopted by the Danish Parliament.
However, getting there requires many steps, which is one of the reasons why a target and results plan is agreed each year between the responsible agency—since 2025, the Danish Agency for Public Safety—and DD ensure agreement on targets and priorities for the coming year.
Goals and results plan for 2026
DDgoals for the coming year follow four main tracks:
- The work of establishing a new, upgraded storage facility at Risø.
- Decommissioning the third and last of Denmark's former research reactors, DR3.
- Specifically, a large amount of concrete from the reactor block will be demolished in 2026.
- Reduction of waste volumes through continued focus on possible reuse.
- Preparatory work regarding the final repository for Denmark's radioactive waste.
An ambitious but realistic plan
Steen Nordstrøm, director of DD, looks ahead to 2026 and the work on the goal and results plan:
“There is no doubt that this is an ambitious plan we have agreed with the Danish Safety Technology Authority. But it is also a plan that we firmly believe is realistic and that we, with our skilled staff, are confident we can make a reality. The goals are important steps on the road towards safe and responsible management of Denmark's radioactive waste.”
