COWI assists with medium-storage studies

Danish Decommissioning has signed a contract with COWI A/S as part of the preparatory work for a political decision on what to do with the radioactive waste.

C COWI A/S has partnered with the Swedish company Studsvik Nuclear AB to solve the task and will assist with two sub-studies:

  • A comparison of the security of an intermediate storage facility and a final repository. The comparison is based, inter alia, on the detailed generic studies of final repository (2011) and the decision-making basis for an intermediate storage facility for low- and intermediate-level waste (2015).
  • An estimate of the economy of the construction and operation of an intermediate storage facility in Denmark and a subsequent final storage solution.

The sub-studies will be submitted to Danish Decommissioning by early June 2016, after which they will be included in an overall report on criteria for the location, safety and economics of a Danish interim storage facility. The overall report will be prepared by GEUS and Danish Decommissioning and will be available by the end of 2016.

Correction, added August 1, 2016:
Work on the sub-studies has been delayed. CowI is now expected to deliver the partial studies in mid-August.
