10 Feb COWI Assists with Interim Storage Facility Investigations
Danish Decommissioning has entered into a contract with COWI A/S as part of the preparatory work for a political decision regarding the future of radioactive waste.
CCOWI A/S has entered into a collaboration with the Swedish company Studsvik Nuclear AB to address the task and will assist with two sub-studies:
- A comparison of the security of an intermediate storage facility and a final repository. The comparison is based, inter alia, on the detailed generic studies of final repository (2011) and the decision-making basis for an intermediate storage facility for low- and intermediate-level waste (2015).
- An estimate of the economy of the construction and operation of an intermediate storage facility in Denmark and a subsequent final storage solution.
The sub-studies are to be submitted to Danish Decommissioning by early June 2016, after which they will be incorporated into a comprehensive report on criteria for the siting, safety, and economics of a Danish interim storage facility. The comprehensive report will be prepared by GEUS and Danish Decommissioning and will be ready by late 2016.
Correction, added August 1, 2016:
The work on the sub-studies has been delayed. COWI is now expected to submit the sub-studies by mid-August.
