15 Mar Political agreement on long-term solution
The Government and the parties in the Danish Parliament agree that the radioactive waste will continue to be stored at Risø until no later than 2073, when a deep geological repository is expected to become operational.
UThe Ministry of Higher Education and Science announced on March 14, 2018, that the government had presented a proposal for a parliamentary resolution on the same day.
The proposal involves an upgrade of Danish Decommissioning's storage facilities at Risø. This enhancement will ensure that radioactive waste continues to be stored under secure conditions in the future, incorporating considerations for flood protection, climate management, and increased waste volumes as the Risø facilities are decommissioned.
Concurrently, efforts will persist in exploring options for exporting the most radioactive waste or participating in an international disposal solution for radioactive waste.
Should an international solution prove unattainable, a deep geological final repository, situated up to 500 meters below ground on Danish territory, must be established for long-term use, with commissioning scheduled no later than 2073.
Danish Decommissioning's mandate is being expanded to encompass contributions to the long-term solution, thereby granting authorization to cover expenses for related activities within this process.
