Mar 15 Political agreement on long-term solution
The government and the Folketing parties agree that radioactive waste will continue to be stored on Risø until 2073 at the latest, when a deep-lying final depot will be able to be used.
U Ministry of Higher Education and Science on 14 March 2018, the government announced that the same day the government has tabled a proposal for a folketing resolution.
The proposal involves an upgrade of The Danish Decommissioning Facility on Risø. The upgrade will ensure that the storage of radioactive waste is also carried out in reassuring conditions in the future, taking into account high-water safety, climate control and increased waste volume as the risø facilities are dismantled.
At the same time, opportunities to export the most radioactive waste or to participate in an international disposal solution for radioactive waste will continue to be sought.
Provided that an international solution cannot be found, a deep geological final repository must be established in the long term at depths of up to 500 metres on Danish soil, which can be put into service by 2073.
The purpose of the Commissioning is extended to include contributions to the long-term solution, including obtaining a legal basis for incurring the costs of activities as part of the process.
