19 Mar Rich bird life in the binoculars
Risø's peaceful and shallow surroundings attract a rich birdlife. On Sunday 18 March, members of the Danish Society for the Protection of Nature were able to enjoy the sight of the many different birds.
N Nanna Høegh Wenzell, who is employed in DD as an operations engineer, is also vice-chairman of the Roskilde department of the Nature Conservation Association. Local members were given an indoor tour of Nanna's workplace last year, while on March 18 the offer was for a bird tour in the open air.
The air was cold and clear as the 15 participants cycled around to selected places where the visibility was particularly good. In addition to their own binoculars, participants were able to closely study the winged creatures through a telescope brought by ornithologist Sten Asbirk. This Sunday, the peninsula featured a true string of bird species - such as pipe, squeaky and knarad, singing swan, shell hatches (both large and peaked), blimps, bliss, buzzards, beach gulls, hooded gulls and indeed a sea eagle in solitary majesty.
